Kathy Bates, 76, to retire from Hollywood after ‘Matlock’ reboot: ‘This is my last dance’

Kathy Bates is prepared to leave Hollywood behind. The 76-year-old actress declared that the revival of the television show Matlock would be her “last dance.”

It is said that she decided to make the change last year after crying while working on a movie.

In a recent interview, she stated, “It becomes my life,” to the New York Times. “I become envy of this talent sometimes. I just want my life, and I can’t keep it back.”

The following day, the Oscar-winning actress—who had previously won Emmys for her work on American Horror Story and Two and a Half Men—notified her agent that she was prepared to retire.

Her agency emailed her the procedural script in January 2024. She never really liked the show, but when she read the screenplay, she recognized herself in the lead role. It was for a relaunch.

The Harry’s Law actress was unable to turn down the opportunity.

Regarding Matlock, she told Entertainment Weekly, “I just feel really lucky.” “I get to use all I’ve learned over the past 50 years to play all of those levels… I feel quite fortunate to be able to embody each of those aspects of this character in one person within the same episode, as I truly like playing them all. I adore having the ability to play so many different notes.

“This dance is my last one.”

Kudos to Kathy Bates for her well-earned retirement! It’s time for you to enjoy the remainder of your life after giving your people five decades of excitement.
